Winners of C.A.S.C. Cup 2018

The C.A.S.C. Cup which is played between, Clane, Ardclough, Sallins & Celbridge from our Society days in 1980, has continued every year since then.

Although we have competed each year, our first breakthrough was in 1999, & under the stewardship of Seamus Mahony, we were successful for the first time, when we won at Clongowes G. C. Since then we won again in 2002, when we played in Killeen G. C. and we then had our first back to back win in 2003, when we again hosted the competition at home. These last two victories were all the sweeter as on both occasions the Clane teams, selected by Mentors; Seamus Mahony & Austin Daly, played superb team golf, and returned scores that made them worthy & clear winners over the other competing teams.

The most recent success under the Captaincy of Daire O’Broin was in July 2018 when the competition was played at Knockanally G.C.

County Masters Golf Classic – October 2001

This is a competition where the Captain and the Captain’s Prize-winner play in a Scotch Foursome format. Ian’s score was the best score in County Kildare and as a result Austin and Ian qualified to represent Kildare and were competing against 24 other counties. Austin Daly and Ian Crofton perform some golfing magic on the Royal Dublin Golf Links scoring a magnificent 43 points. They just lost out for runners-up spot on the back six. Quoting in part from Liam Kelly’s article in the Irish Independent “There was a fair bit of good nature craic about the Kildare footballers coming up just short again, but Clane’s Austin Daly and Ian Crofton made a terrific bid for the title”. The Independent continued “Successive birdies on the par five eighth and par three ninth brought them out in 22 and they made a strong challenge on the back nine. The par four 17th where the Clane golfers had just one point after a double-bogey sixth cost them dear”. The winners were Callan Golf Club with a score of 44 points with Black Bush Golf Club beating Clane for second place.

Michael Moore Cup (Semi-final)

Clane Golf Club had a superb run in the Michael Moore Cup for 19 handicap and over. They took some notable scalps along the way, to the semi-final; Co. Meath, Mullingar, Portarlington and Knockanally. They put up a tremendous effort in the semi-final before being beaten by the eventual winners Mount Temple, overall a great performance. The team managers were, Gerry Crowe and Denis Brogan. Team 2001 Vincent Tierney, Peter O’Grady, Richard Greene, Sean Brilly, Pat Reid, Cormac O’Rourke, Paddy Kennedy.

Carroll’s Irish Open

Tommy Carew, Peter Burke and Noel Mulhall represented the Club at the Carroll’s Irish Open Pro-Am competition at Killarney G. C. in 1991. The lads had a excellent tournament finishing in 5th place.

The Great Britain and Ireland Rules of Golf Quiz

Clane Golf Club scooped the Regional award for the Irish section of the Rules of Golf Quiz. The Regional plaque was presented to our Captain Diarmuid F Coonan at the all Ireland finals in Edmondstown Golf Club in December 2003. The Clane team acquitted themselves very well in the finals, which was won by Lahinch Golf Club, who went on to win out in the Great Britain and Ireland Rules of Golf Quiz overall finals in St. Andrews. The team of Seamus Carew, Ciaran Tierney, Ted Murray, Richard Greene and Austin Daly are now preparing to defend their Regional Champion status over the coming months. “This was a tremendous achievement for a small club to win this regional award and to participate so well in the final, it is the proudest day of my captaincy to accept this regional award on behalf of Clane Golf Club,” D. F. Coonan, Captain 2003.
